Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
